Saskatchewan Roughrider running back Kory Sheets, defensive lineman Jermaine McElveen and linebacker Diamond Ferri have each been named a CFL Gibson’s Finest Player of the Week.
Sheets was named the Offensive Player of the Week following a standout performance in the Western Final. Sheets had a season-high 28 carries for 177 yards and scored a touchdown to help the Riders clinch a berth in the 101st Grey Cup in Regina with a 35-13 win on the road against Calgary.
This is the fourth time this season the Purdue product has been named CFL Offensive Player of the Week. He was also named Gibson’s Finest Offensive Player of the Month in July.
McElveen was named the Defensive Player of the Week following Sunday’s Western Final. The former Alabama-Birmingham standout had team-high five tackles – one for a loss – and an interception in the Roughriders win over Calgary.
Ferri was named the Special Teams Player of the Week after recording a game-high four special teams tackles and three defensive tackles in Saskatchewan’s win in Calgary. He played a key role in causing a turnover late in the game on punt coverage.
This is the first time in their careers McElveen and Ferri have received weekly honours.
It is the sixteenth time this season that a Rider has earned player of the week honours after Jermaine McElveen, Diamond Ferri, Chris Milo, Chris Getzlaf, Chris Garrett, Tyron Brackenridge, Darian Durant (twice), Rey Williams (twice), Rob Bagg, Kory Sheets (four) and Jock Sanders have all picked up weekly awards.
