While the Riders didn’t win their first pre-season game dropping a decision to the Edmonton Eskimos, several players did show they have what it takes to be a member of the 2015 team when they take to the field in the season opener, June 27 against Winnipeg. One of those players was second year receiver Alex Pierzchalski.
The 23 year old was the team’s 2nd round pick (18th overall) in the 2014 draft, was the 620 CKRM offensive game star for the Riders last week after catching three passes with one of them going for a touchdown. Pierzchalski isn’t going to let that game dictate his future though as he knows there’s more work needs to be done.
It was exciting!” Pierzchalski said. “I’m moving on though. I’m trying to get better and what matters right now is earning a roster spot on this team. I think I took advantage of some opportunities, but there were other things I was unsatisfied with. Nothing is guaranteed so I have to get better.”
Those are strong words for the Toronto native who isn’t going to rest on a one game performance. Pierzchalski needs another strong showing against the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night at Mosaic Stadium, but his play did catch the eye of head coach Corey Chamblin who admits he needs to see more from the former U of T Blue.
“He [Pierzchalski] did some good things, but there is still some room for improvement, “Chamblin said. “He has some growth to go through, but he did make some plays on Saturday and he is coming along.”
In trying to take his game to the next level, Pierzchalski worked out with CFL all-star and former Rider, Andy Fantuz as well as other CFL’ers. He feels that helped him out going into training camp.
“Coming into camp last year, I didn’t know what I had to do to get better, but after being here last year, I knew what I had to do as I am now training like a pro.” Pierzchalski stated. “We were on the field running routes and working one and one’s against defensive backs and I think that was huge.”
As Pierzchalski prepares for Calgary, he knows what has to be done if he is going to crack the roster.
“I’m fighting for a roster spot and I have to get better on special teams. That is part of the game that is going to get me on the field, “Pierzchalski said. “There is nothing guaranteed right now and while I am improving on offence, it’s a process and I’m focused on just landing a spot on this team.”
Pierzchalski and the rest of the green-and-white will make their home debut on Friday night as the defending Grey Cup champ, Calgary Stampeders come to town with a 7:30 kick off.
