A late-fourth-quarter comeback propelled the Saskatchewan Roughriders to Thursday’s 12-11 CFL victory over the Edmonton Elks.
Edmonton went ahead 3-0 on first-half singles by by punter Jake Julien (two) and placekicker Dean Faithfull (one) before 27,197 spectators at Mosaic Stadium.
Brett Lauther’s 16-yard field goal in the final minute of the second quarter created a 3-3 tie.
A third punt single by Julien gave Edmonton a 4-3 lead at 3:19 of the third quarter, during a game that had an accompanying Throwback Thursday theme.
Edmonton went ahead 11-3 when Faithfull converted a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Taylor Cornelius.
Saskatchewan responded by moving 85 yards in four plays before Harris was intercepted in the end zone by Marcus Lewis.
After assuming possession on their 32-yard line with 2:56, the Roughriders embarked on a 10-play touchdown drive that culminated in a four-yard scoring toss to Mitch Picton with 1:04 left. Harris then found Kendall Watson for a game-tying two-point convert.
Lauther put the Riders ahead 12-11 with a rouge on the ensuing kickoff.
The Elks’ last-gasp possession concluded when Nic Marshall intercepted Cornelius with 16 seconds left.
Marshall had also registered a game-saving interception June 24 to seal a 29-26 overtime victory over the host Calgary Stampeders.
Harris completed 19 of 29 passes for 289 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
Picton, making his first start of the season, had four receptions for a game-high 76 yards.
Larry Dean and C.J. Reavis had nine and eight defensive tackles, respectively, along with one pass knockdown each.
The Roughriders (3-1) are to return to action July 15 against the Stampeders (5 p.m., Mosaic Stadium).
