The Saskatoon Hilltops and Regina Thunder both registered season-opening victories in Prairie Football Conference action on Sunday.
Saskatoon defeated the Edmonton Wildcats 50-2 at SMF Field while the Thunder downed the host Calgary Colts 36-20.
In Saskatoon, the Hilltops’ Trey Reider threw for 294 yards and three touchdowns.
The Hilltops’ Drake Douglas caught nine passes for 171 yards and one score. Jeremy Funk and Noah Flaman had Saskatoon’s other TD receptions.
Boston Davidsen added two touchdown runs for the Hilltops, who also got a rushing TD from Xavier Sabo.
Matt Wist and Justin Adamko registered interceptions for the Hilltops, who got a quarterback sack from Johnathon Stevens.
Also on Sunday, Ryland Leichert paced the Thunder’s offence at Hellard Field in Calgary.
Leichert rushed 21 times for 170 yards and one TD. He also reached the end zone on a 22-yard pass from Carter Moberg, who threw for 256 yards.
Justin Reiger had two TD runs for Regina, which got three field goals from Shawn Green.
The Thunder’s top receivers were Jaden Litzenberger (three catches for 81 yards), Isaiah Woodley (four for 75) and Lucas DiIorio (four for 58).
Woodley is on the Roughriders’ practice roster, along with Thunder teammates Max Parkinson (defensive lineman) and Riley Schick (offensive lineman).
Both Saskatchewan-based PFC teams have Week 2 road games on Sunday. Saskatoon faces the Winnipeg Rifles and the Thunder visits the Wildcats.
