The 1990 Labour Day Classic was highlighted by a 107-yard touchdown drive.
And it only lasted one play.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders established an enduring franchise record — for the longest completion — when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visited Taylor Field 34 years ago.
On first down from the home team’s three-yard line, quarterback Kent Austin looked deep and found south-bound speedster Jeff Fairholm for what turned out to be a 107-yard touchdown pass.
That play ignited a remarkable three-year run for Austin.
His eye-popping numbers from the 1990, 1991 and 1992 classics include totals of 1,246 aerial yards and 11 touchdown passes.
In short order, Austin erupted for three of the top four passing-yardage totals in the history of the Roughriders-Bombers late-summer long-weekend matchup.
That is merely one of the tidbits that has been extracted from the newly compiled Labour Day Classic record book, which appears for the first time on Riderville.com leading up to Sunday’s clash between Saskatchewan and Winnipeg (5 p.m., Mosaic Stadium).
Scroll down and you will find the top single-game and career totals by members of both teams.
Marvel, if you will, at the pass-catching prowess of Fairholm, Ray Elgaard and Don Narcisse — all of whom were on the field at the same time in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
They occupy the top three spots on the Roughriders’ All-Time receiving-yardage and touchdowns lists.
In addition to setting the pace in touchdowns, with eight, Narcisse threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Dan Farthing in 1995.
Unsurprisingly, Milt Stegall’s nine touchdowns are the most by a Blue Bomber.
Although green is the theme of this website, special mention must also be made of Bob Cameron, who played in — get this — 22 Labour Day Classics (1980, 1982-2002).
While appearing in 38 per cent of all the Classics that have been played to this point, Cameron launched 197 punts and registered 12 singles.
His records are highly unlikely to be duplicated. Others may be rewritten as soon as Sunday.
