Labour Day Rematch records: It all started with Ronnie in 1977

The 20th consecutive Labour Day Rematch will be the 28th overall.

But let’s start with 23.

Ron Lancaster was the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quarterback when they first visited the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in September to conclude a home-and-home set.

The game was played at Winnipeg Stadium on Sept. 11, 1977, when another first-time event took place.

For all No. 23 accomplished in a storied tenure with the Roughriders that began in 1963, Lancaster had never scored two touchdowns in a game until the Green and White faced the Blue Bombers nearly 47 years ago.

The Little General handled most of the Roughriders’ scoring, running for majors of nine and two yards, as Winnipeg won 39-17.

That was the 171st two-TD game by a player in Roughriders history. The number has swelled to 426 as Saskatchewan prepares to face Winnipeg on Saturday at Princess Auto Stadium.

Those 426 multi-TD games have been registered by 167 players — 28 of whom were teammates of Lancaster’s at some point over his 16 seasons in a Roughriders uniform.

One-sixth of the two-TD games in Roughriders history were recorded during Lancaster’s tenure.

Beyond 1977, the Roughriders and Blue Bombers played back-to-back sets that began in Saskatchewan in 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1998.

Beginning in 2004, the follow-up game in Winnipeg became an annual occurrence. The 20th annual Labour Day Rematch is slated for Saturday (1 p.m., CTV, CKRM).

Will any of the Roughriders’ LDR records be broken this year? Stay tuned …
