There must be something about 39-32 games between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the host Toronto Argonauts.
On nine occasions, a Roughrider has caught two touchdown passes in Toronto — most recently on Friday, when Dohnte Meyers scored twice to help the Green and White win 39-32 at BMO Field.
One of the previous eight two-TD games was registered by Jeff Fairholm on Sept. 26th, 1992, when the Argonauts prevailed 39-32.
Fairholm scored from 71 and 63 yards. Meyers’ second TD was a 70-yarder that was, in many ways, reminiscent of Fairholm.
One step and Meyers, a la Fairholm, was gone.
Meyers caught a Trevor Harris pass in first-down territory and outran all would-be tacklers for the remaining 60 yards.
“As soon as I see daylight, I try to hit the gas,” Meyers said with a smile.
The second-year CFLer caught four passes for a career-high 125 yards to help Saskatchewan improve its record to 3-0.
Meyers scored from 32 yards in the first quarter before following up with the 70-yarder shortly after halftime.
“It’s just an exciting play that you dream of,” the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder said. “To be able to have that opportunity to celebrate with my teammates in the end zone, it feels amazing.”
He became the third Roughriders receiver in as many games to reach 100 yards this season.
Samuel Emilus had eight catches for 133 yards in a season-opening, 31-26 victory over the visiting Ottawa REDBLACKS on June 5th.
KeeSean Johnson had eight grabs of his own, for 124 yards, as the visiting Roughriders downed the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 28-23 on June 14th.
It was Meyers’ turn to reach triple digits on Friday.
“He’s another guy who we know can make unbelievable plays and have games like that,” Head Coach Corey Mace said. “Not one person in the locker room is shocked.
“We really believe strongly in this receiving corps. We think we’re super deep. But he is somebody who can take something that might not look like a lot and turn it into something.
“He’s an excellent twitchy receiver. Even though he’s a little bit smaller than the other guys, he does not care about making touch catches in dark areas.
“I cannot say enough good things about ’te. I kind of had a feeling he was going to have a game like that. I’m just happy that he did.”
QB UPDATE
Harris was not at practice on Wednesday. He is dealing with illness and a head injury, according to the injury report.
“From this standpoint, we’re being careful,” Mace said.
Asked whether Harris will play against B.C., the Head Coach said: “Tomorrow will be the final decision-maker on that. We’ve got the luxury of tomorrow, so we’ll just try to play it smart.”
If Harris is ruled out of Saturday’s game, Jake Maier will be elevated to the role of starting quarterback.
Maier was obtained from the Calgary Stampeders during the off-season.
“I love it here,” said Maier, who started 45 games for Calgary over the past four seasons.
“There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by here when I’m not grateful and I’m not excited. It’s a breath of fresh air for me personally.
“Just watching the team compete for the last three weeks and to be a part of that has been really, really cool.
“If I have the opportunity to have that (start), that would be really, really special.”
