Dohnte Meyers, meet Bobby Thompson.
On Saturday, Meyers matched feats that had been accomplished only by Thompson in the long and storied history of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Meyers put himself in the conversation with Thompson — a 2007 inductee into the SaskTel Plaza of Honour — due to an explosive performance in Saturday’s 34-6 CFL victory over the host Montreal Alouettes.
The tone was set from the outset when Meyers returned the opening kickoff 46 yards into Montreal territory and ignited a touchdown drive. He subsequently caught five passes for 136 yards, including a 58-yarder.
In so doing, he became the first Roughrider since Oct. 24, 1971 to:
• Register at least 136 receiving yards and a kickoff return of 46 yards or more in the same game.
• Explode for a reception of 58-plus yards and a kickoff return of 46 or more in a single game.
Thompson touched all those bases in a 50-18 victory over the B.C. Lions at Taylor Field.
During that lopsided game, he caught five passes for 163 yards and two TDs — one of which was on a 97-yard collaboration with iconic quarterback Ron Lancaster — and scored another major on a franchise-record 115-yard kickoff return.
Lancaster’s grandson, Marc Mueller, is in his second season as the Roughriders’ offensive co-ordinator.
One of Mueller’s primary weapons is Meyers, who has compiled 35 receptions for 565 yards and four touchdowns while helping Saskatchewan post a league-best 7-1 record.
Broadening the statistical parameters, Meyers is one of the few Roughriders to erupt for a reception of 50-plus yards and a kickoff return of at least 40 in one game. Again, we bring you Bobby Thompson!
Sept. 14, 1969: Lancaster hit Thompson for touchdowns of 83 and 72 yards against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Thompson also returned a kickoff for 42 while amassing 272 all-purpose yards.
Oct. 24, 1971: Let’s revisit the 97- and 115-yard TDs by Thompson during a game in which he put up a franchise-record 361 all-purpose yards.
Aug. 27, 1972: Lancaster and Tom Campana produced a 56-yard aerial TD against the visiting Calgary Stampeders. Campana also returned a kickoff for 47.
July 18, 1991: Rick Worman found Jacox down the right sideline at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium for a 106-yard TD. Jacox also returned a kickoff 45 yards.
Aug. 2, 2025: Meyers’ masterpiece in Montreal.
The same night, Meyers accounted for the seventh instance of a Roughrider registering at least 100 receiving yards and a kickoff return exceeding 40 in the same game.
Aug. 7, 1964: George Reed caught five passes for 100 yards and added a 62-yard kickoff return against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Taylor Field.
Sept. 14, 1969: Thompson versus Hamilton (repeat).
Oct. 24, 1971: Thompson versus B.C. (repeat).
Oct. 22, 1972: In Edmonton, Campana produced 120 yards on six receptions and returned a kickoff for 49.
July 17, 1979: Also in the Alberta capital, Rodney Parker caught four passes for 121 yards and gained 55 on a kickoff return.
July 18, 1991: Jacox’s gem in Calgary, where he totalled 347 all-purpose yards (third in team history).
Aug. 2, 2025: Meyers in Montreal.
Factor in the return game as a whole, applying the 40-yard minimum to punts as well as kickoffs, and there are two other all-around performances of note.
Sept. 1, 1975: Campana caught eight passes for 163 yards and scored on a 78-yard punt return against Winnipeg in a Labour Day Classic from nearly 50 years ago. Campana finished with 326 combined yards — fifth-best in Roughriders history.
Sept. 5, 1982: Also on Labour Day weekend, Dwight Edwards caught a 57-yard TD pass from John Hufnagel and added a 43-yard punt return. (Beginning in 1982, the Labour Day Classic was exclusively against Winnipeg. A sellout for this year’s Classic was announced on Tuesday.)
