Resting an assortment of starters, the Saskatchewan Roughriders extended the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the limit on Friday before the home team won 17-16 before 32,343 spectators at Princess Auto Stadium.
Sergio Castillo kicked a game-winning, 22-yard field goal on the final play.
The victory by Winnipeg (9-8), coupled with the B.C. Lions’ subsequent 37-24 win over the visiting Edmonton Elks, secured a playoff spot for the Blue Bombers.
The game did not have a bearing on the standings for Saskatchewan (12-5), which has clinched first place in the CFL’s West Division and hosting privileges for the Western Final (Nov. 8, 5:30 p.m., Mosaic Stadium).
“I am incredibly proud of this group,” Roughriders Head Coach Corey Mace told CKRM after the game. “We came into Winnipeg. We know what that team is fighting for.
“Football for us through the rest of the season is extremely meaningful. Those guys (on the Roughriders) fought and scrapped all night.”
That was evident from the outset.
Saskatchewan opened Friday’s scoring 49 seconds into the first quarter when short-yardage quarterback Jack Coan scored on a one-yard run. Brett Lauther added the convert.
Coan scored two plays after Kerfalla Exume forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. Winnipeg was then penalized 42 yards for pass interference, giving Saskatchewan the ball on the one-yard line.
Winnipeg answered with a seven-play, 81-yard drive that culminated in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Zach Collaros to Ontaria Wilson. Castillo’s convert created a 7-7 tie.
Saskatchewan went ahead 10-7 when Brett Lauther kicked a 39-yard field goal at 8:34 of the first quarter. The three-pointer was set up by Mario Alford’s 54-yard kickoff return.
Castillo’s 12-yard field goal, at 13:08 of the first quarter, created a 10-10 tie.
Winnipeg went ahead 11-10 when Jamieson Sheahan punted for a 55-yard single at 12:37 of the second frame.
Following a turnover on downs late in the second quarter, the Riders’ Jake Maier completed three consecutive passes for a total of 30 yards before Lauther kicked a 42-yard field goal. It was his third field goal on the final play of the first half in a span of six games.
Winnipeg regained the lead (14-13) on a 23-yard Castillo field goal at 3:21 of the third quarter. The Blue Bombers were forced to settle for three points after Antoine Brooks Jr. registered his second sack of the game.
Lauther put Saskatchewan ahead 16-14 with a 31-yarder at 12:16 of the third quarter. Mitch Picton made three receptions, totalling 33 yards, on that possession. His diving 20-yarder along the sideline put the Roughriders in field-goal range.
Maier, starting at quarterback with Trevor Harris being rested, went 15-for-20 for 123 yards over three quarters before being replaced by Coan.
Dressing for his fourth game this season, Coan saw his first action outside of short-yardage situations. He played the entire fourth quarter.
“We just stuck with the plan that we had in place,” Mace said. “We want meaningful reps for Jack.
“We’ve got a lot of faith in everybody on the team. It wasn’t just him (who received extra playing time). There’s a couple of guys who we rolled in the fourth quarter and, truly, throughout the entire game. Everybody on that roster today was out there playing, offence and defence.
“It was just us having faith in the group, and we were that danged close.”
On the game’s final possession, the Blue Bombers moved 42 yards in 10 plays — consuming three minutes — before Castillo settled matters as time expired.
“Ultimately, I thought we fought hard, but we just didn’t get it done tonight,” Picton told CKRM.
The Roughriders’ regular-season finale is set for Oct. 25 against the B.C. Lions (5 p.m., Mosaic Stadium). Saskatchewan will then have a bye during Week 1 of the playoffs.

• Brooks Jr. registered the Roughriders’ seventh two-sack game of the season. He joined Malik Carney (three), Micah Johnson (two) and Shane Ray (one). Friday’s two-sack game was the first by a Saskatchewan linebacker since C.J. Reavis accomplished that feat in B.C. on Sept. 29, 2023.
• Brooks Jr. added five defensive tackles, two special teams tackles, two pass knockdowns and a quarterback pressure that forced a second-down incompletion midway through the fourth quarter.
• Alford moved into a tie with Tristan Jackson for the most kickoff returns of 50-plus yards (six) in Roughriders history. On the night, Alford had two kickoff returns for 72 yards. He needs 29 yards to pass Corey Holmes and become the Roughriders’ All-Time leader in kickoff return yardage. Holmes has 4,077 yards.
• Maier had 13 consecutive completions before his final attempt of the third quarter was knocked down. Cody Fajardo set the Roughriders’ record of 15 in a row against the visiting B.C. Lions on Aug. 6, 2021. Fajardo broke the Riders’ record of 14, set by Ron Lancaster against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Taylor Field on Sept. 18, 1977.
• With his first CFL touchdown, Coan became the 625th Roughrider (playoffs included) to reach the end zone since the franchise’s inception as the Regina Rugby Club in 1910.
• DaMarcus Fields, who had a pick on Friday, has registered both his interceptions in Winnipeg this season. He added two special teams tackles on Friday.
• Long snapper Jorgen Hus played in his 166th CFL regular-season game. He is 26th on the Roughriders’ games-played list.
• Coffin-corner punts by Jesse Mirco pinned Winnipeg back to its two- and four-yard lines. Those punts, neither of which was returned, travelled 49 and 52 yards, respectively.
• Roughriders linebacker A.J. Allen registered a career-high nine defensive tackles, eight of which were in the first half.
• Picton had game-high totals of five catches and 71 yards. He also had the game’s longest reception (a spectacular 30-yarder).
• Saskatchewan has scored a touchdown on its first possession in three consecutive games.
